5 Basic Tips to Grow Your Hair this month

If I had a dollar for every time someone told me “my hair doesn’t grow”. This is a very common misconception among people with type 4 hair or people that have a coily hair texture.

Study has shown that your hair is the second fastest growing tissue in your body after the bone marrow. Therefore, before you conclude that your hair growth is stagnant, check to see that you are taking some basic steps to do right by your hair.

Some of these basic steps include the following:

Avoid using heat as much as you can: I’m talking about blow dryers, hair straighteners, hot combs, curling irons, etc. You need to chill on the heat, it should be a once in a while thing if you are looking to grow your hair longer and faster. And if it is absolutely necessary to use a blow dryer to style your natural hair, then adjust it to the lowest heat.

Stop combing it all the time: Get a detangling brush instead. You can also invest in wide tooth combs, they don’t contribute to pulling out your hair unnecessarily every time you need to detangle as opposed to regular combs.

Moisturize: I cannot overemphasize the need to keep your hair moisturized, it loves moisture. If it’s stressful for you to apply products in your hair every now then, you can get a spray bottle and mix your favorite products with water and just spray as you like.

Protect it: Be it twists or braids or cornrows, protective styles help to keep your hair from drying out and breaking. And if you must wear your hair out, tie it in a satin scarf, or bonnet or a durag before you go to bed at night, it’ll help to keep the moisture in.

Follow natural hair enthusiasts on social media: Trust me these people know what they’re doing, follow their Instagram, watch them on YouTube, you’ll learn a lot. Tega Clifford is one of my favorite natural hair gurus right now, her channel is so engaging.
